Attention is focused on whether the leader of the medical community will be replaced as the conflict between the medical profession and the government, triggered by the 'increase in medical school admissions,' continues into its tenth month.
The Korean Medical Association (KMA) will hold an extraordinary general assembly on the 10th to vote on a motion of no confidence (impeachment) against KMA President Im Hyun-taek and the formation of an emergency response committee.
The extraordinary general assembly, which will decide President Im's fate, will be held at 2 p.m. at the KMA headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Out of 248 registered delegates, 226 have expressed their intention to attend the assembly. However, the actual number of attendees may vary.
For the impeachment motion to pass, at least two-thirds of the registered delegates must be present, and two-thirds of those present must vote in favor. The formation of the emergency response committee requires a majority of the registered delegates to be present and a majority of those present to approve; in the event of a tie, the motion is considered rejected.
If the impeachment motion passes, President Im, who became the 42nd president last May with the ambition to rectify the government's 'medical manipulation,' will step down after only six months in office. Should President Im be impeached, the KMA must hold a by-election within 60 days according to its bylaws. Until a new president is elected through the by-election, the emergency response committee formed at the extraordinary general assembly is expected to fill the executive vacuum for approximately two months.
