Myeoncheonhyanggyo (Chungcheongnam-do Monument) in Dangjin, Chungnam is drawing attention as it stirs up a “Confucian wind” in the Chungnam region.
Through the Confucian Academy, which ran for five months from June to October, it once again revealed its status as a leading hyanggyo representing Chungnam during the Joseon Dynasty.
The Confucian Academy was planned to seek changes among Confucian scholars to effectively respond to the era of artificial intelligence (AI), and was carried out as part of the “2024 Confucian Culture Revitalization Project” with government support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
With the catchphrase “21st Century K-Confucianism,” the academy attracted a total of about 700 participants, enjoying great success.
Under the guidance of Jeon Gyo Ahn Heunggyu, with Ryu Jongin as the chief director of education, and with the united efforts of young directors in their 50s and 60s, the Confucian Academy was successfully completed.
In particular, Myeoncheonhyanggyo overcame the limitations of being a small, aging village by securing outstanding instructors and conducting flawless academic management.
To attract interest in the humanities in the rural area where such subjects are unfamiliar, the directors used their own funds, personally distributed posters, and actively promoted the program, which also contributed to its success.
Inviting top-level professors such as Professor Shin Changho (Korea University), Professor Lee Hyunjung (Chungnam National University), Professor Kim Sicheon (Soongsil University), former Director Kim Kyungseon (Sungkyunkwan Seokjeon Education Center), and Team Leader Nam Gwanghyun (Dangjin City Cultural Heritage Team) was a driving force behind the successful Confucian Academy.
Professor Ryu Hocheol (Anyang University College of Liberal Arts, director at Myeoncheonhyanggyo), who has played a key role so far, said, “We will not be satisfied with the success of the 2024 Confucian Academy, but will prepare even more enriching programs to vigorously sow the seeds of ‘Dangjin Humanities’.”
At the completion ceremony held on the 7th at “Hakkogjae,” the education center of Myeoncheonhyanggyo, Dangjin Mayor Oh Seonghwan, Dangjin City Council member Kim Myeonghoe, and others attended and spent time communicating with the trainees.
In his congratulatory remarks, Mayor Oh Seonghwan said, “The promotion of the Confucian Academy in Myeoncheon is very meaningful,” and added, “I will continue to pay close attention to the various projects of Myeoncheonhyanggyo in the future.”
