"Lock the Windows"... 43 Monkeys Escape Together from US Research Institute

Escape of Monkeys from Medical Research Institute 'Alpha Genesis'
Monkey Escape Incidents Also Occurred in 2014 and 2016

In a small town in South Carolina, USA, an incident occurred where 43 monkeys escaped from a medical research institute.

On the 7th (local time), foreign media including AP reported that 43 female red-haired monkeys collectively escaped from the medical research institute 'Alpha Genesis' in South Carolina on the 6th. The escaped monkeys had never been used in experiments and were young individuals weighing about 3 kg. According to local police, these monkeys are timid and pose little risk of harm or disease transmission to people. However, the police advised nearby residents to lock their doors and windows and not to approach the monkeys if seen for safety reasons. They also emphasized reporting to the police immediately to capture the monkeys upon discovery.

The monkeys are believed to have escaped because a newly hired employee at the institute accidentally failed to lock the door of the containment facility. The institute plans to install thermal cameras and traps around the area and lure the escaped monkeys with food such as fruit to capture them. The institute stated, "The monkeys' escape was our mistake," and added, "We are currently monitoring the monkeys and making efforts to lure them with food."

At this institute, 26 monkeys escaped in 2014 and 19 monkeys escaped in 2016. The institute has been conducting clinical trials using monkeys for treatments of brain diseases. As monkey escape incidents have repeatedly occurred at the same institute, animal rights groups are raising their voices in criticism. The animal rights group 'Stop Animal Exploitation Now' demanded in a statement sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture that inspectors be dispatched immediately to conduct a thorough investigation. The group pointed out, "Allowing over 40 monkeys to escape is a clear act of negligence, which not only threatens animal safety but also endangers the residents of South Carolina."
