Creating a 1.34 Million Square Meter Complex Innovation Space in the Old Downtown

Daejeon City announced that it has received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for the designation and master plan of the Urban Convergence Special Zone, and will now proceed in earnest.

The Urban Convergence Special Zone is a future-oriented city model that creates a complex innovation space integrating industry, residential, and cultural facilities in regional hubs to attract corporate investment and generate jobs. In this special zone, urban and architectural regulations are relaxed to allow high-density mixed-use development, and there are benefits such as reduced fees for the use of national and public land and exemptions from certain charges.

The designated zone covers the area including the KTX Daejeon Station district and the former Chungnam Provincial Government Office in Seonhwa-dong, extending to Jungang-ro, with a total size of 1.34 million square meters (about 400,000 pyeong).

The city's top priority is the Mega Chungcheong Square development project. By 2030, high-density mixed-use facilities including convention, commercial, residential, and hotel spaces will be built in the East Plaza area of Daejeon Station, ranging from 7 basement floors to 49 above-ground floors. The city is currently preparing to invite private sector participants for the project.

The city also plans to link the global cultural content event "0si Festival" with the Urban Convergence Special Zone to develop Jungang-ro as a street of festivals and symbols.

A city official stated, "The existing downtown of Daejeon has grown around Daejeon Station since the opening of the Gyeongbu Line in 1905, but its growth has slowed compared to the new city areas since the 2000s. Through the Urban Convergence Special Zone project, we aim to revitalize the downtown centered around Daejeon Station and create tangible changes and achievements that citizens can experience."
