Taesan ginger, grown in the fertile loess soil of the Taean Peninsula in Chungnam and nurtured by sea breezes, has begun full-scale shipment from early this month.
According to the Taean County Agricultural Technology Center, Taean, recognized as one of the main production areas of domestic ginger, currently has 429 farms cultivating ginger on a total area of 160 hectares this month.
This year, due to low temperatures in spring and high temperatures in summer, growth has been somewhat sluggish, and production is expected to decrease by about 5% compared to last year.
Ginger is renowned for its outstanding antioxidant and anticancer effects, to the extent that the Indian medical text 'Ayurveda' refers to it as "a divine remedy."
Among them, Taean ginger is loved by consumers nationwide for its rich content of gingerol, an antioxidant compound, and its strong flavor and aroma.
Taean County, centered on the Taean County Agricultural Technology Center, has selected and is fostering ginger cultivation to address field challenges caused by climate change and to improve product quality.
Based on the analysis of demonstration tests for shaded cultivation and triple-row planting, the county has reduced pests and diseases and lowered management costs, resulting in a 23% improvement in product quality.
Additionally, by utilizing early cultivation with plastic mulching, productivity has increased by 30%, and various efforts to enhance the competitiveness of local ginger farms are receiving positive responses from farmers.
A county official stated, "We will foster Taean ginger as a leading local specialty crop by improving cultivation methods and disseminating technology in response to climate change," and added, "We will ensure that ginger becomes a key product for local farmers struggling with imported agricultural products."
