Emart is offering a sack of napa cabbage (3 heads) at around 4,000 won to mark the kimchi-making season.

On the 8th, Emart announced that it will hold a discount event on kimchi-making ingredients in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to help stabilize prices for kimchi-making and grocery shopping.

From the 8th to the 14th, Emart, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, will sell a net of napa cabbage (3 heads, domestically produced) at 5,984 won with a 20% discount when Shinsegae Points are accumulated. Additionally, customers who purchase the napa cabbage net during this event will receive an extra 'e-money' credit that can be used immediately from the next day. Through the Emart app, an additional 1,000 e-money points can be credited, making the effective purchase price 4,984 won. When simply calculated per head, the price drops to as low as 1,661 won.

The maximum discounted price of 1,661 won per head is about 60% cheaper than the average retail price of 4,549 won per head (product grade) as of the 6th, according to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) Agricultural Products Marketing Information Service (KAMIS).

For this three-week kimchi-making season, Emart has prepared about 230,000 nets (approximately 690,000 heads) of napa cabbage, releasing about 100,000 nets (approximately 300,000 heads) in the first week of the event alone. Emart plans to continue the kimchi ingredient events for about three weeks starting from the 8th, changing the events weekly.

The reason Emart could lower the price of napa cabbage is due to diversifying production regions nationwide. This year, due to climate fluctuations and prolonged late summer heat, napa cabbage prices soared, but by contracting with production areas across the country rather than a specific region, they were able to minimize regional weather impacts. Furthermore, by negotiating advance volume plans from early this year and purchasing in bulk, they were able to reduce prices. Emart’s napa cabbage production areas are scattered nationwide, including Mungyeong in Gyeongbuk, Asan, Yesan, and Seosan in Chungnam, Chuncheon in Gangwon, and Haenam and Muan in Jeonnam.

In addition to napa cabbage, radishes and pork for bossam (boiled pork wraps) are also offered at discounted prices. For one week, a bundle of radishes (5-6 pieces) will be sold at 5,584 won with a 20% discount when Shinsegae Points are accumulated through the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs linked event, and customers can also receive an additional 1,000 e-money points. Domestically produced pork belly and neck meat (chilled), which are in high demand for bossam during kimchi-making, will also be sold at a 20% discount with Shinsegae Points accumulation, along with an additional 5% e-money credit event.

An Emart official said, "We prepared special low-price events to ease customers’ financial burden for kimchi-making," adding, "We will continue to plan various events so that customers can purchase family food ingredients at affordable prices."

Meanwhile, the pre-order for salted napa cabbage held by Emart at the end of last month saw 'open run' phenomena, with dozens of people lining up before store openings at each location. This pre-order event ended early on the second day as all stock was sold out.
