Last Month, Noise Complaint at Multi-Family House in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul
Shirtless Man Wielding Weapon Causes Disturbance to Police
Calmed Down When Officer Loaded Taser... Arrested
A man who was causing a disturbance while intoxicated threatened the responding police officers with a weapon but stopped when he saw a Taser. On the 8th, the Seoul Police YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "Charging at police officers with a knife? The scene of that day when the Taser was even loaded." According to the report, at around 11:40 PM on the 16th of last month, the Jongam Police Station received a 112 call reporting someone causing a disturbance at a multi-family house in Seongbuk-gu.

At the time, the man causing the noise, Mr. A, greeted the responding officers with his head bowed while shirtless and then obediently returned to his home. However, he soon began causing a more severe disturbance by forcefully opening and closing the metal front door. Police officers waiting outside in preparation for any sudden incidents heard Mr. A’s noise and immediately responded. As the police approached, Mr. A came out of the house wielding a weapon.
In response, the police urgently blocked the door and dodged his attack, then confronted Mr. A through the front door. They requested backup via radio and calmly loaded a Taser. When the police aimed the Taser and warned Mr. A to drop the weapon, he eventually put it down. The police arrested Mr. A on the spot as he calmed down and confiscated several weapons from inside the house. Mr. A reportedly stated during the investigation that he was angry due to conflicts with neighbors. The police detained Mr. A on charges of obstructing official duties with a weapon and handed him over to the prosecution.
Netizens who watched the video praised the dedication of the police officers, commenting, "How dare he threaten law enforcement with a knife," "Thanks to the police’s calm response, it didn’t escalate into a bigger incident," and "It’s fortunate that they had a Taser." The Taser was first introduced to the police in 2005 as a safer alternative to firearms for law enforcement, allowing immediate response and minimizing casualties, making it increasingly useful at crime scenes. Accordingly, under the ‘2024 Basic Plan for Police Talent Development,’ the police have expanded Taser training for new officers from 3 shots to 8 shots.
