The nationwide court website experienced a temporary outage on the afternoon of the 7th, and the court revealed that it took access-blocking measures due to suspected external Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. It also stated that the court's internal network was not targeted by the attack.
DDoS refers to a phenomenon where a surge in access to a specific site causes temporary delays for subsequent users trying to connect.
A Supreme Court official said, "There is currently a suspected DDoS attack, but the court has its own Cybersecurity Center and Data Center, so it is blocking the suspected attacks on the website."
The Court Administration Office detected the attack around 3:21 p.m. that day and immediately blocked it. It is reported that they are continuing to respond, centered at the Bundang Cyber Center.
The Supreme Court official added, "It seems that a considerable number of civil petitioners experienced inconvenience due to temporary access delays, but since we are responding immediately, if they try reconnecting shortly, they will be able to use the court services. The court's internal network is isolated from the internet, so it is not a target of the attack and is operating smoothly."
Earlier, when users tried to access the court website from outside, they remained in a "loading" state for a long time, and even if the connection was eventually established after waiting, the response time was long, making it impossible to use internal functions normally.
The access interruption occurred on the court website that provides public services such as case searches. It has been confirmed that there were no issues with electronic litigation, the court's internal network, or the internet registry office, so it is unlikely that there will be direct damage to trials or judicial functions.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that since last week, hackers presumed to be from overseas have launched attacks against multiple domestic public institutions.
A Supreme Court official stated, "This is the first large-scale DDoS attack this year," and added, "The judiciary is closely cooperating and responding with agencies such as the National Intelligence Service and the National Police Agency."
