About 60 people, including members of the Korea Ceramic Foundation, the Pottery Association, and citizens, attended the ceremony to honor the spirits of the unknown potters.
The 'Monument to the Unknown Potter' was established in 1977 to commemorate the craftsmanship and artistic spirit of the potters who produced the highest quality royal white porcelain and led trends at the time, and to carry on their legacy. The monument was created by sculptor Choi Ui-sun with a donation from Lee Hu-rak. The inscription on the monument was written by Hye-gok Choi Soon-woo, former director of the National Museum of Korea, and the calligraphy was done by calligrapher Lee Ki-woo.
Lee Yun-seop, chairman of the Gwangju Royal Ceramics Business Cooperative, stated, “Erecting the Monument to the Unknown Potter and holding this memorial ceremony has become an opportunity to inherit and develop the brilliant legacy of many potters, thereby solidifying the succession of Joseon white porcelain culture and art. We will continue the authenticity so that the craftsmanship of the unknown potters of previous generations can be passed down.”
