G580 with EQ Technology Limited Edition Unveiled
Standard Model Scheduled for Release in Early Next Year
Mercedes-Benz Korea launched the G-Class's first pure electric vehicle optimized for off-road driving, the G580 with EQ Technology, on the 7th. The limited edition 'Edition One' was introduced first, and the standard model will be released in the first half of 2025.
It is the longest-standing model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Since its debut as a cross-country vehicle in 1979, it has continued for over 40 years. It was first unveiled at Auto China held in April this year. Since its initial launch, cumulative production surpassed 500,000 units as of May last year. The company has previously named its battery electric vehicles with designations like EQA and EQS, but this model uses a different naming convention.
Like internal combustion engine models, it maintains a ladder-type frame structure. It combines an independent suspension with a newly developed rear axle with enhanced rigidity. The interior is designed for easy access to driving information, suitable for off-road driving. It also features a transparent bonnet function that displays the area below the front of the vehicle, which is normally out of sight, on a monitor.
Electric vehicle-specific features have been applied. Each of the four wheels is equipped with an individually controlled electric motor producing 146.75 horsepower, delivering a maximum output of 587 horsepower. The battery is integrated into the lower frame to lower the center of gravity. With a capacity of 118 kWh, it can travel up to 392 km on a single charge according to domestic certification standards. The underbody panel is made of high-strength carbon composite material to reduce battery impact. The battery cells are sourced from China's CATL.
Off-road specialized functions include G-Steering, which reduces the turning radius on rough terrain; G-Turn, which allows the vehicle to rotate almost on the spot; and a 3-stage intelligent off-road crawling cruise control. The maximum wading depth is 850 mm, 150 mm deeper than internal combustion engine models. The G-Roar function reproduces the unique driving sounds of the traditional internal combustion engine G-Class.
The angular exterior design has been retained. Differentiation points include the black grille at the front and the design box at the rear. The limited edition model released this time features a unique design and is limited to 70 units in Korea. It is characterized by a different design for the AMG line high-performance model exterior, including the grille, bumper, and wheels. Exterior colors can also be customized. The interior is finished with Nappa leather on the seats and steering wheel.
Convenience features include the second-generation MBUX infotainment system, 12.3-inch driver and media displays, Burmester 3D surround sound system, and Dolby Atmos audio system as standard. The price of the limited edition new car is 239 million KRW (including VAT).
