Targeting the US Easter Theater Peak Season
Director Bong Joon-ho's film 'Mickey 17,' made in Hollywood, USA, has had its release date postponed again from January to April next year.
On the 7th (Korean time), the American media outlet Variety reported that distributor Warner Bros. changed the release date of 'Mickey 17' from January 21, 2025, to April 18. Originally, the biopic of singer Michael Jackson titled 'Michael' was scheduled to be released on that date, but after its delay, the distributor quickly moved up the release date of 'Mickey 17.'
The new release date falls during the Easter period, which is considered a traditional peak season for American theaters. 'Mickey 17' is expected to perform well at the box office during this prime season without competing against major blockbusters. Additionally, the postponement from January to April has allowed more flexibility, and the film may also be screened in IMAX format, according to the media report.
Originally, 'Mickey 17' was scheduled to be released on March 29 this year, but it was postponed to January next year due to the Hollywood actors' union strike, and now the release date has been delayed again. The distributor, encouraged by the positive response to the first released trailer and gaining confidence from it, is said to have quickly acted despite the burden of postponing the release once more. The domestic release in Korea is also likely to be in April.
'Mickey 17' is Bong's next work following 'Parasite' (2019), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and swept four Academy Awards (Oscars) in the United States. The story is about a clone sent to pioneer an ice-covered space planet. Hollywood actor Robert Pattinson and Korean-American actor Steven Yeun star in the film.
The film is an adaptation of the science fiction novel 'Mickey7' by American author Edward Ashton. The original novel tells the story of Mickey7, an artificial human dispatched to colonize the icy world of Niflheim. Director Bong became interested in the unpublished manuscript of the novel and decided to pursue the film adaptation.
