Negotiations on Defense Cost-Sharing "May Be Revisited"
"Trump to Reduce Support for Ukraine"
Wi Seong-rak, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and a former diplomat who passed the 1979 Foreign Service Examination, emphasized that there will be "many changes" in the "Trump re-election era." On the 6th at 3:30 PM, when Trump's victory seemed certain, Wi gave an interview to Asia Economy, predicting changes across the Korea-US relationship and policies toward North Korea, China, and Russia. However, he refrained from commenting on detailed issues such as the "frequency of Korea-US military exercises." He expressed concern about the changes that Trump’s election would bring on a broad scale. Below is a Q&A with Representative Wi.
Q. What changes do you expect in our country's political situation or economy?
A. There will be many changes. In areas such as the alliance relationship, North Korea-related matters, and economic relations with China and Russia, many changes are expected.
Q. South Korea and the United States are currently negotiating defense cost-sharing.
A. It seems likely that the discussions will be reopened. Trump approaches matters with an America First stance. For an administration like Yoon Seok-yeol’s, which places great emphasis on Korea-US alliance cooperation, such changes will be burdensome. Changes are expected not only in cost-sharing but also in overall security matters related to the US Forces Korea, military exercises, and extended deterrence.
Q. How do you think the Russia-Ukraine war will change?
A. (President Trump) will likely reduce support for Ukraine compared to now and try to steer the situation toward a ceasefire.
Q. How should the Korean political sphere respond?
A. It is necessary to have dialogue through various channels. Since there are multiple groups within the US Republican Party, including those close to Trump and traditional Republicans, the government should prioritize initiating talks.
