The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has prepared the 'Improvement Plan for New School Facility Projects' to alleviate overcrowded classes and enhance the efficiency of the new school establishment process.
The Office of Education stated on the 7th that, until now, school buildings were constructed with a standard of 5 floors for elementary schools and 4 floors for middle and high schools, making it difficult to respond quickly and effectively to overcrowded class issues. With this improvement plan, if building regulations such as floor area ratio and building coverage ratio arise, the district unit plan can be changed to allow the construction of 6-floor school buildings by relaxing the standards.
The Office of Education will bear all additional costs arising from this change with its own budget.
The Office of Education will pilot the improvement plan at Gwangju Sinhyeon 1 Middle School (tentative name), scheduled to open in March 2027; Osan Segyo 2-3 High School (tentative name), scheduled to open in March 2028; and Hwaseong Dongtan 12 High School (tentative name).
Additionally, to shorten the new school establishment period, the Office of Education will promote measures such as pre-allocating planning service fees, shortening construction periods efficiently through improvements in construction methods, and regularizing consultations with project implementers.
Lee Geun-gyu, Director of the School Establishment Planning Division at the Office of Education, said, "This improvement plan is expected to effectively resolve the overcrowded class problem in schools across the province and contribute to enhancing the quality of education. Efficient construction period management and proper compliance with administrative procedures will help create a stable educational environment for students."
