National Address Scheduled for the 7th Local Time
U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump, who won the November 5 presidential election, in a phone call.
According to the White House, on the 6th (local time), President Biden congratulated President-elect Trump on his election victory during their phone call and expressed his intention to invite him to the White House.
A White House official explained, "President Biden expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transfer of power and emphasized the importance of efforts to unite the country," adding, "He also invited President-elect Trump to meet at the White House. They will coordinate a specific date in the near future." Along with this, President Biden also spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, to offer words of encouragement.
President Biden is also scheduled to deliver a national address on Thursday, the 7th. Originally, President Biden was set to have a rematch with former President Trump in this election, but after the first TV debate between the presidential candidates hosted by CNN aired, concerns about age-related risks and cognitive abilities spread, leading him to withdraw from the Democratic presidential candidacy in July and declare support for Vice President Harris.
Meanwhile, the 47th U.S. presidential election held the previous day ended in a landslide victory for former President Trump, defying expectations of a close race. Former President Trump secured victory in Michigan (15 electoral votes), a Rust Belt battleground state, sweeping all three former Democratic strongholds known as the ‘Blue Wall,’ just as he did in 2016. As a result, the number of electoral votes secured by former President Trump increased to 292.
In the early hours of the day, former President Trump also won Wisconsin (10 electoral votes), another Blue Wall battleground state, securing 276 electoral votes and surpassing the magic number of 270 needed to win. Once all votes are counted, it is expected that former President Trump will have 312 electoral votes, while Vice President Harris will have 226. In the 2016 election, when former President Trump first won, he secured 304 electoral votes.
