[US Election 2024]
French President Emmanuel Macron on the 6th (local time) agreed to cooperate for the peace and stability of the international community during a phone call with President-elect of the United States Donald Trump.
According to the ?lys?e Palace, the French presidential office, President Macron and President-elect Trump spoke for about 25 minutes that day. During the call, President Macron emphasized the importance of Europe's role and said that he is ready to cooperate on current issues, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Middle East problems, after President-elect Trump takes office at the end of January next year.
The ?lys?e Palace described the call as a "very good 25-minute discussion" and emphasized that the two leaders have known each other for a long time. The daily newspaper The Guardian noted that President Macron was one of the world leaders who first called President-elect Trump after the election results were confirmed.
So far, considering President Macron's stance on President-elect Trump's skepticism toward the Atlantic alliance between Europe and the United States, he has advocated a "self-reliance theory," arguing that Europe should reduce dependence on the U.S. and invest more to strengthen its own sovereignty and defense. He revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that morning, writing, "We will strive for a more integrated, stronger, and autonomous Europe in this new environment."
