About 100 citizens and staff attended the event held at the Uijeongbu Music Library.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun stated, "We will develop Chudong Park, the largest park in Uijeongbu, into an ecological landmark representing northern Gyeonggi Province," adding, "We envision becoming a 'city where people want to walk and a garden city where people want to stay,' where citizens can enjoy and nurture the forest in their daily lives."
Chudong Park, covering approximately 220,000 pyeong, is located in a densely populated residential area with large-scale apartments and possesses ecologically and environmentally excellent natural resources, making it a valuable ecological green axis for Uijeongbu City. However, due to a lack of symbolic significance and spatial connectivity, the number of visitors has decreased in recent years.
Accordingly, the city plans to enhance the park's accessibility and environmental value by creating an "Entrance Garden" near the Science Library and Chudong Well-being Park and connecting all major zones with forest trails to improve citizen access.
Additionally, a "Chudong Sky Yard" will be established at the summit to provide citizens and visitors with a panoramic view of the cityscape and a space to enjoy sunrises and sunsets.
Starting in the second half of this year, forest management work will begin to create diverse themed forests such as fir, maple, and metasequoia forests. Furthermore, themed gardens like the Wind Garden and Healing Garden will be developed to showcase the park's changing scenery throughout the seasons.
The city will also encourage citizen participation in the park's creation and maintenance. Volunteer groups such as the Chudong Forest Garden Volunteer Corps and Chudong Gardeners will be organized to motivate citizens to fulfill their roles as park owners through tree planting events and gardening days.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, "The creation of Chudong Forest Park is a citizen space developed through public-private cooperation and will serve as an opportunity for Uijeongbu City to become a representative city in northern Gyeonggi Province," adding, "We will enhance Uijeongbu's urban brand value by creating a sustainable garden culture together with citizens."
Meanwhile, at the awards ceremony held that day, Mayor Kim Dong-geun presented certificates of commendation to 25 individuals, including those recognized for regional development contributions and exemplary citizens in 2024.
