On the 6th, the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council held a meeting of the Council Steering Committee and passed the “Resolution on the Formation of the Gyeongbuk-Daegu Administrative Integration Special Committee.”
The main points of this resolution are to limit the number of special committee members to within 22, set the activity period until June 30, 2026, and define the scope of the special committee’s activities as devising cooperation measures and response strategies between local governments at the council level related to the Gyeongbuk-Daegu administrative integration.
The Gyeongbuk-Daegu administrative integration aims to overcome the risk of local extinction and regional low-growth trends caused by concentration in the metropolitan area through the launch of an integrated metropolitan local government, foster the formation of a local economic living zone with global competitiveness, and promote balanced national development.
Although on October 21, Gyeongbuk Province, Daegu City, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the Local Era Committee held a four-party meeting and announced a joint agreement on the Gyeongbuk-Daegu administrative integration, many procedures such as resident consent and the enactment of a special law remain for practical integration. Accordingly, the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council plans to fulfill its role as a representative body of the residents by forming a special committee, considering that administrative integration between metropolitan local governments is a national task that will determine the future administrative system of South Korea beyond regional issues of Daegu and Gyeongbuk.
Lee Chun-woo, Chairperson of the Council Steering Committee of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council, stated, “We are strongly urging the executive branch to ensure that democratic procedures, including sufficient collection of residents’ opinions, are carried out during the Gyeongbuk-Daegu administrative integration process,” and emphasized that as the chairperson of the Steering Committee, he will actively support the Gyeongbuk-Daegu Administrative Integration Special Committee to ensure it has no shortcomings in conducting broad legislative activities.
