Meta will introduce a dedicated account that limits Instagram usage for teenagers in South Korea starting January next year.

On the 5th, Meta held the "Youth Online Safety Roundtable" with key stakeholders from academia, policy institutions, and civil society to promote policy and social cooperation on youth online safety issues, announcing this plan.

The event began with a presentation titled "Meta's Approach to Youth Safety" by Dr. Priyanka Bala, Head of Safety Policy for Meta's Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

A representative youth protection feature is the "Youth Account," which automatically applies enhanced account protection settings for users under 19. Youth Accounts are supervised by parents and are set to private by default. They reduce exposure to sensitive content, limit messaging with strangers, and help manage app usage time by displaying notifications after 60 minutes of use. The protection features of Youth Accounts are set automatically. For users under 17, parental approval is required to lower the account protection settings. Currently, this feature operates in some countries and is planned to be expanded globally early next year.

Seulgi Lee, Director of External Policy at Meta Korea, said, "This roundtable was organized to exchange opinions among various stakeholders and seek constructive cooperation measures amid growing policy development and social demands for youth protection. Meta will continue to closely communicate with experts, parents, and user communities to address youth online safety issues."
