LS Electric to Participate in BIXPO 2024... Unveiling Superconducting Solution Technology

June 6-8 at Gwangju Kim Dae-jung Convention Center
Deployment of Superconducting Current Limiter and Next-Generation ESS

LS Electric will showcase world-class power solutions at Korea's largest power exhibition, 'BIXPO 2024 (Bitgaram International Power Technology Expo)'. The company will prominently feature superconducting power solutions, regarded as 'dream technology'. Through this, LS Electric plans to firmly establish its brand image as a leading 'K-Electric' company at BIXPO.

LS Electric announced that it will participate in BIXPO 2024, held for three days from the 6th to the 8th at the Gwangju Kim Dae-jung Convention Center, unveiling a large number of next-generation power solutions including superconducting current limiters.

Marking its 50th anniversary, LS Electric has prepared a 54㎡ exhibition space with the main concept of '50 Years of Power Energy Technology Innovation'. The company will present future eco-friendly total power solutions centered on three themes: superconducting solutions, next-generation direct current (DC) distribution, and all-in-one energy storage systems (ESS).

First, the company will showcase its superconducting power solutions. LS Electric’s superconducting current limiter reduces fault currents within 1 to 2 milliseconds (1 ms = one-thousandth of a second) when accidents such as lightning strikes occur in the power system, minimizing damage to power facilities caused by fault currents.

Korea’s power grid lines are relatively short and interconnected. When fault currents occur, they can lead to large-scale blackouts. This phenomenon is intensifying due to the expansion of renewable energy and distributed power sources.

LS Electric, in collaboration with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), has developed an MV-class large-capacity superconducting current limiter for grid interconnection including renewable and distributed power sources, and has been conducting demonstrations for commercialization since last year at the Seogochang substation in Jeonbuk. The company expects accelerated global market expansion as the solution can be flexibly applied to manage fault currents caused by renewable energy generation and distributed power interconnections.

LS Electric plans to accelerate not only domestic commercialization but also entry into the overseas superconducting market. The company reported that expansion into Southeast Asia and Europe is becoming concrete. Negotiations are underway with countries such as Vietnam and Ireland for the introduction of superconducting current limiters.

The company will also introduce DC-based smart distribution solutions and next-generation ESS platforms. It emphasizes its world-class eco-friendly power solution technology and supply capabilities applied across the entire power system from renewable energy generation to transmission, transformation, and distribution.

LS Electric explained that its next-generation ESS platform is a product independently developed based on the world’s top manufacturing capabilities in power electronics-based industrial drives (inverters). A key feature is the modularization of power electronic building blocks (PEBB) in 200 kW units, enabling smart independent operation.

An LS Electric official said, "We have unveiled a large number of next-generation smart power solutions that embody 50 years of technological innovation at BIXPO 2024," adding, "We will firmly establish the brand image of LS Electric as a leading 'K-Electric' company driving the global power infrastructure market."
