[US Election 2024]
Examining the Day-of-Election Movements
Radio Interview: "Tired of the Era of Division"
Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice presidential candidate in the United States, made a surprise visit to the Democratic National Committee headquarters on Election Day, the 5th (local time), and spoke directly with voters. That night, she planned to visit her alma mater, Howard University, to observe the vote counting.
According to CNN and other broadcasts, Vice President Harris visited the Democratic National Committee headquarters located in Washington, D.C. During the election campaign, Harris became known for her favorite snack, Doritos, which she brought with her to the headquarters, where she expressed gratitude to staff and volunteers. She also made several calls to voters who had inquired from the volunteers' workspaces.
Vice President Harris encouraged voting during her calls with voters. When she asked one voter, "Have you already voted?" and the voter replied affirmatively, she said, "Thank you," which reportedly led to cheers and laughter at the scene, according to local media. In another call, she emphasized, "Remind each other and everyone of the power of your voice and your vote," adding, "This election is very important."
She also spoke with an 8-year-old child. After introducing herself, Harris joked, "I’m waiting for you to grow up 10 more years."
On Election Day, Harris also participated in local radio interviews focusing on battleground states. Appearing on a Pittsburgh radio broadcast, she said, "People are tired in this era of division," and "We all have more in common than what divides us." She further emphasized, "Leadership should not be about blaming and tearing people down," and "Leadership is about trying to find common ground." This was interpreted as a criticism of her competitor, former President Donald Trump's divisive political style, and an emphasis on inclusion and unity.
In an interview with a radio station in Atlanta, Georgia, Harris dismissed as "noise" the insulting remarks made by former President Trump and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, who targeted her with comments such as "low intelligence" and "the name of trash is Kamala Harris."
On the night of Election Day, Harris planned to observe the vote counting at her alma mater, a historically Black college. Howard University, located in Washington, D.C., is a traditional Black university established before the enactment of the Civil Rights Act that prohibited racial discrimination. Harris, who is both Black and Asian, is a graduate of this institution.
