Expected to Raise Awareness of Deepfake Crimes and Responsibility for Creating False Videos

Recently, the spread of deepfake sex crimes through SNS has emerged as a social issue. Starting from university campuses, the damage is rapidly spreading to elementary, middle, and high schools, increasing anxiety among adolescents and parents.

In response, Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Junhee) has promoted education to eradicate and prevent digital crimes among youth, including deepfakes.

On November 4th, the district held a special lecture titled "Special Lecture for Students and Parents on Deepfake Crime Victimization" at the 8th-floor auditorium of the Gwanak-gu Office. About 200 students from elementary, middle, and high schools in the district and their parents attended the lecture.

This special lecture was organized to alleviate concerns of students and parents regarding damages caused by cybercrimes such as deepfake crimes using recent artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

In particular, the participation rate of parents was high due to concerns that deepfake crimes, which have emerged as a "new type of school violence," often start from students' curiosity and that many do not recognize them as crimes.

The district invited Dr. Hwang Mingu, an expert in crime video analysis, to give a lecture titled "Finding the Truth Contained in the Video." The main topics included ▲the actual conditions of deepfake crimes ▲cases of crime victimization ▲response measures for victims, diagnosing problems through crime victim cases and suggesting countermeasures.

The district expects that this special lecture will help students and parents understand deepfake crimes and further foster a sense of responsibility regarding the production of false videos.

District Mayor Park Junhee said, "We are also conducting psychological counseling programs to support victims of various school violence, including deepfake crime victims, in schools within the district," adding, "We will continue to do our best to create schools safe from deepfake crimes through active support that students and parents truly need."
