32,244 People, 5.6% Increase Compared to the Same Month Last Year
The number of deaths in August increased by more than 5% compared to the same month last year, marking the highest level since the medical crisis triggered by the announcement of medical school quota expansion in February and the subsequent resignation of residents in protest.
According to the 'August Population Trends' released by Statistics Korea on the 23rd of last month, the number of deaths in August was 32,244, a 5.6% increase compared to the same month last year. This is the highest monthly death toll since the medical crisis in February.
The monthly number of deaths increased compared to last year in every month except May after the medical crisis occurred. In February, the number of deaths was 29,977, a 9.6% increase compared to the same month last year. In March and April, 31,160 and 28,659 people died, representing increases of 7.6% and 4% respectively compared to the same months last year. In June and July, the increases were 0.6% and 0.4% respectively.
