On the 4th, the Gyeonggi-do Forest Environment Research Institute signed a business agreement with the Kyrgyzstan National Academy of Sciences Gareev (E.Z. Gareev) Botanical Garden at Mulhyanggi Arboretum to respond to climate change and enhance carbon sinks.

Gyeonggi-do is currently promoting the Kyrgyzstan Carbon Neutral Forest Creation Support Project (ODA) this year, and the two research institutions proceeded with the business agreement based on the recognition of the need for information exchange and research cooperation on climate change response.

The main agreement items include ▲ exchange of genetic resources and propagation/management methods for plant research responding to climate change ▲ information exchange and research cooperation to enhance forest carbon sinks.

Yoo Choong-ho, director of the Gyeonggi-do Forest Environment Research Institute, said, “Kyrgyzstan, which has many high-altitude forests, is very similar to the mountainous forests of Gyeonggi-do, so we expect it to be very helpful in research related to climate change and enhancement of carbon sinks.”

The province possesses over 6,500 species of plants and conducts research on the adaptability of alpine plants, cultivation methods, and biological characteristics of medicinal and ornamental plants. It is expected that the business agreement with the Kyrgyzstan National Academy of Sciences Gareev Botanical Garden will contribute to biodiversity enhancement through securing various plant genetic resources and diversification of international development cooperation projects.

Meanwhile, the Gyeonggi-do Forest Environment Research Institute is conducting research on ex situ conservation of major plant genetic resources such as rare and endemic plants and research to enhance carbon sinks in relation to climate change response.
