Namyangju City held an academic conference titled "People Intersecting in Late Joseon in Namyangju" on the 2nd at the Gyeonggi Viewer Media Center Multipurpose Hall. Provided by Namyangju City
Namyangju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Joo Gwang-deok) announced on the 4th that the academic conference titled "People of the Late Joseon Period Who Crossed Paths in Namyangju" was successfully held on the 2nd at the multipurpose hall of the Gyeonggi Viewer Media Center.
As part of the Jeong Yak-yong academic research project, this conference was co-hosted with the Dongguk University Institute of Culture and Academia. It was planned to reexamine the great Silhak scholars such as Jeong Yak-yong, Kim Yuk, Hong Man-seon, and Nam Byeong-cheol who passed through Namyangju, and to broadly understand the various cultural heritages that originated in Namyangju.
On the day of the conference, 20 researchers, including experts related to Dasan studies, gathered to deliver in-depth presentations and engage in lively discussions on the historical figures and cultural heritage of Namyangju.
The conference opened with an opening address by Noh Dae-hwan, Director of the Dongguk University Institute of Culture and Academia, and a congratulatory speech by Vice Mayor Hong Ji-seon. The event was divided into two parts with a total of eight thematic presentations.
The first part, "The Path of Namyangju," included △ Construction and management of Queen Jeongsun’s royal tomb (Kim Chung-hyun, Korea Institute of Korean Studies) △ Temples in Namyangju and royal-sponsored Buddhist paintings (Yoo Kyung-hee, National Museum of Korea) △ Reconstructive study of the Joseon-era Yangju road system (Yang Jeong-hyun, Suncheon National University) △ Academic activities at Seoksil Seowon by Kim Chang-hyeop of Nongam (Kim Ja-woon, Kongju National University).
Following this, the second part, "People of Namyangju," featured presentations on △ Jeong Yak-yong and Majae: Focusing on the mutual formation process of identity (Yoon Seok-ho, Pusan National University) △ The Namyangju residence and significance of the Jangdong Kim clan in the late Joseon period (Kim Se-ho, Gyeongsang National University) △ 19th-century astronomer Nam Byeong-cheol: Centered on 'Uigijipseol' (Nam Kyung-wook, Gwacheon National Science Museum) △ The 18th-century rural scholar’s guide to village life: Hong Man-seon’s ‘Sanlim Gyeongje’ (Yeom Jeong-seop, Hallym University).
Vice Mayor Hong Ji-seon said, “I hope this event will be a special opportunity to organically understand Jeong Yak-yong and Namyangju,” and added, “I look forward to this academic conference laying the foundation for realizing ‘Namyangju Awakening Jeong Yak-yong’s Imagination.’”
