2024 Goyang-si Adult Literacy Education Poetry Recitation Event Held

Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 4th that on the 1st, it held the 2024 Goyang City Adult Literacy Education Poetry Recitation Event titled "My Story, Our Poetry Recitation" at the community shared space Ttasum Darak.

Opening with a support video from the teachers, this poetry recitation event featured seven learners representing seven literacy education institutions in Goyang City, who recited original poems expressing the emotions and experiences they felt while receiving literacy education. Families also took time to convey their feelings through letters.

The literacy learners, who have devoted their lives to their families, calmly read poems with trembling voices that expressed not resentment for the frustrating and difficult times when they could not read or write, but joy and happiness at finally having the opportunity to learn.

The simple and beautiful poems expressing feelings such as "I am excited on the way to school," "I am very happy to be able to read signboards, handle bank tasks, and although it is still a bit difficult, to order using a kiosk," and "I want to continue studying until the day I go to heaven" gave a calm and deep resonance.

Following this, families expressed their gratitude through letters: "Since my wife started participating in the literacy education program, our family’s life has completely changed. In the past, she mostly spent time watching TV and chatting with friends, but these days she reads, studies, and studies again. As my wife is full of vitality, the family atmosphere has brightened," "I have come to understand my mother better. I am sorry for not knowing her feelings until now," and "I am really happy and proud that my grandmother has gained courage and confidence."

Adult literacy education is a project that supports elderly people who missed the opportunity to learn due to various circumstances and have never been able to read or write in their lifetime, helping them to learn letters and communicate with the world.

In addition to this poetry recitation event, Goyang City is promoting the necessity of literacy education and discovering potential demand through various activities such as poetry and painting exhibitions and the publication of poetry collections.
