Kim Young-sik, Chairman of NST, "Doing Our Best to Raise Pride in Public Research Institutes"

Inauguration Ceremony of the 5th Chairman

Kim Young-sik, the 5th Chairman of the National Science and Technology Research Council (NST), emphasized at the inauguration ceremony on the 4th that he will do his best to enhance the pride and status of government-funded research institutes and the research council.

Chairman Kim stated, "I hope all members of government-funded research institutes will participate in challenging, innovating, and communicating so that these institutes can become milestones in South Korea's science and technology," emphasizing the proactive efforts of government-funded research institutes. NST is an institution under the Ministry of Science and ICT that manages and supports government-funded research institutes in the field of science and technology.


Chairman Kim also declared support for ▲ a new leap for government-funded research institutes based on autonomy, innovation, and management, ▲ a shift in the research paradigm toward government-funded research institutes pursuing the completeness of research and development (R&D), ▲ securing global advanced technologies and revitalizing the local era as a hub leader in industry-academia-research collaboration, ▲ strengthening the think tank function of science and technology policies and systems to suggest development directions and lead changes for government-funded research institutes, and ▲ enhancing communication at the public's level and securing the status of government-funded research institutes.


Chairman Kim graduated from Yeungnam University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, earned a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa, USA, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, USA. He has served as a senior researcher at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, professor and president of Kumoh National Institute of Technology, chairman of the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development, and as a member of the 21st National Assembly.
