Discussions on Semiconductor Chip Production and Renewable Energy Expansion
Lee Jae-myung: "Bureaucrats Sometimes Become Obstacles"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, to discuss measures to promote the AI (artificial intelligence) industry. Two months ago, Chairman Chey also visited the National Assembly in the name of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry to propose support for the AI industry and improvements to corporate regulations to Lee.
On the 4th, Lee had tea and a conversation with Chairman Chey at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where the 'SK AI SUMMIT' was held. Senior spokesperson Cho Seung-rae and Chief Secretary Lee Hae-sik accompanied Lee at the private meeting place, while SK Group was represented by Chairman Chey, Lee Hyung-hee, president of SK SUPEX, Yoo Young-sang, president of SKT, and Yoo Kyung-sang, vice president of SKT.

While moving to the tea meeting place, Lee chatted with President Lee. President Lee said, "The scale of investment in the near future will be in the thousands of trillions," adding, "An enormous market is just opening, so it is a race against time." In response, Lee said, "If we fall behind by even half a step, we will be completely ruined."
According to remarks made at the 'AI Corporate Roundtable' held after the tea meeting, Lee and Chairman Chey discussed semiconductor chip production, the establishment of AI data centers, and the expansion of renewable energy. The roundtable was co-hosted by SK Group and the Democratic Party. Vice President Yoo said at the roundtable, "I had a chance to mention this earlier, but I think a new type of chip must come out," adding, "Also, as was discussed earlier, building data centers is really a difficult problem due to power, infrastructure, and environmental issues."

Vice President Ahn Hyun of SK Hynix said at the roundtable, "As mentioned in the chairman’s presentation earlier, it is now a world where green energy (renewable energy) must be used," and added, "It is necessary to make good use of regions advantageous in terms of green energy throughout our country." He also said, "I do not necessarily expect these policies to bear fruit within 4 to 5 years," and requested, "I ask for long-term consideration."
After the roundtable, Lee met with reporters on his way out of the meeting room and said, "Support measures (legislation) need to be reviewed going forward," adding, "They are often far removed from the field, so bureaucrats often become obstacles." Regarding ways to build the AI ecosystem, he said, "In the end, the ecosystem must solve it on its own," while pointing out considerations such as market size and the gap with overseas.
