Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award Winner Jo Gijeong
The 15th Goryeong National Sijo Singing Contest, hosted by Goryeong County and organized by the Goryeong Cultural Center and the Korean Sijo Association Goryeong Branch, was successfully held on the 2nd at Daegaya Culture Nuri Ureuk Hall.
Sijo singing is a traditional cultural heritage where melodies are added to sijo poetry. It offers a glimpse into the leisure and space of our ancestors' lives and is a very charming music embodying the aesthetics of slowness. Since 2010, Goryeong County has been steadily hosting this event to enhance its image as a city of Gayageum and Korean traditional music, and this year marked the 15th edition.
This competition was held in preliminary and final rounds, focusing on the challenging Dodeuri Jangdan section to hold a high-level contest. After fierce competition among participants, Mr. Jo Gijeong won the grand prize awarded by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Shin Tae-woon, Director of the Goryeong Cultural Center, said, “I hope the Goryeong National Sijo Singing Contest, a pride of Goryeong County, will continue to be a competition nurtured by many sijo artists.”
County Governor Lee Nam-cheol said, “I sincerely congratulate the awardees who achieved excellent results at the Goryeong National Sijo Singing Contest, and Goryeong, a city of world heritage and the ancient capital of Daegaya, will continue to fulfill its role as a cultural and artistic hub.”
