The Most Common Remittance Error Cases... "Pressed '0' Instead of '8' in Account Number"

The most common type of account transfer mistake was pressing the number '0' instead of '8'. Additionally, the periods with frequent transfer errors were found to be the paydays on the 10th, 15th, and 25th of each month.

On the 4th, the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) announced detailed analysis results of the "Wrongly Sent Money Recovery Service." Until September, KDIC reviewed 42,647 cases (83.7 billion KRW) of refund support applications through this service, confirmed 17,375 cases (25.4 billion KRW) as eligible for support, and recovered 11,676 cases (14.5 billion KRW).

Analyzing 8,659 cases where a single digit in the account number was mistakenly pressed, KDIC found that the most frequent error was pressing '0' instead of '8', as these keys are located close to each other on the keypad. This was followed by pressing '3' instead of '8', '4' instead of '7', and '9' instead of '6'.

The periods with many transfer errors were identified as the 10th, 15th, and 25th, when expenditures are high. It was also found that the number of mistaken transfers increased on days with higher temperatures. The average temperature in August over the past three years rose from 29.1°C to 30.8°C and then to 33.0°C, while the number of applications during this period increased from 971 to 986 and then to 1,339.

By region, Gangnam-gu, Songpa-gu, and Gangseo-gu in Seoul ranked highest, indicating that mistaken transfers were proportional to population size. There were also a considerable number of cases where money was mistakenly sent to people with the same name.

KDIC stated, "We plan to utilize the results of this thematic analysis in system operations and actively improve the system so that citizens can use the recovery service more quickly and conveniently." They added, "In addition to the existing application methods (online and in-person), we plan to introduce a mobile application method to enhance convenience."

Meanwhile, KDIC plans to promote the recovery service as one of the services that enhance public convenience at the "2024 Korea Government Expo," held from the 13th to the 15th at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Gwangju Metropolitan City.
