Launch of Regional-University Cooperation Task Force and Kick-off Meeting on the 4th
Close Communication with Regional Universities... Establishing Cooperative Relationships Between Regions and Universities
Pohang City established the 'Regional-University Cooperation Working Group' on the 4th and held a kick-off meeting to create a foundation for the local community and universities to grow together through close cooperation with regional universities.
On the 4th, Pohang City held a kickoff meeting for the launch of the 'Regional-University Cooperation Practical Task Force.'
The meeting was chaired by Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil, the head of the working group, and about 40 participants attended, including officials from regional universities such as POSTECH, Handong Global University, Sunrin University, and Pohang University, as well as related department staff.
The 'Regional-University Cooperation Working Group' aims for the mutual growth of the region and universities. It plans to explore customized cooperation methods considering regional characteristics in line with the government's changed university support systems, such as the 'Glocal University 30' initiative and the 'Regional Innovation-Centered University Support System (RISE)' to be fully implemented from 2025.
At the meeting, the changed government policy directions were introduced, focusing on the Glocal University 30 and RISE systems. Emphasis was placed on a bottom-up change led by local governments providing region-specific tailored support, rather than the previous top-down university support approach centered on the Ministry of Education.
Additionally, POSTECH and Handong Global University explained their respective regional cooperation projects and directions, introducing ways for regional universities to collaborate with Pohang City to produce tangible results.
Furthermore, a Q&A session was held to discuss cooperation methods between the region and universities regarding current projects and to exchange mutual opinions.
Pohang City plans to use this meeting as an opportunity to derive project implementation strategies and practical cooperation methods between the region and universities. Through continuous feedback and evaluation, it aims to expand related departments and broaden cooperation to institutions and industries in the future.
Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil stated, “Pohang City and regional universities will closely cooperate to become a model of mutual growth that fosters innovative talent and advanced research technology representing Pohang. We expect the Regional-University Cooperation Working Group to play a central role as a hub in this process.”
Pohang City is committed to strengthening the cooperation system between the local community and universities, establishing a virtuous cycle from talent development to employment, entrepreneurship, and settlement, overcoming the dual challenges of low birth rates and concentration in the metropolitan area, and advancing as a sustainable city.
