Namwon Shine Muscat Grapes Embark on First Export to Canada

Shine Muscat grapes from Namwon, Jeonbuk, have faced difficulties due to price drops caused by domestic overproduction, but they have opened export channels and were shipped to Canada for the first time this year.

Until now, Namwon City, Jirisan Nonghyup, and Namwon Cooperative Joint Business Corporation have diversified the distribution and sales networks for grapes (Campbell, Shine Muscat). After starting exports in August through negotiations with buyers in Hong Kong and Vietnam, Namwon's Jirisan foothills were designated as an export quarantine complex for Canada by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, enabling the first export to Canada.

On the 1st, the Jirisan Nonghyup Production Area Distribution Center jointly sorted 6.4 tons (1,600 boxes/4kg) and held a shipment ceremony for Shine Muscat grape exports. They agreed to export under Namwon agricultural products’ joint brand "Chunhyangaein".

The export ceremony was attended by the head of Namwon City's Horticulture Industry Division, the head of Jeonbuk Nonghyup Headquarters, the head of Nonghyup Namwon Branch, the chairman of Jirisan Nonghyup, the representative of Namwon Cooperative Joint Business Corporation, the chairman of Jirisan Grape Cooperative, and representatives from the Canadian export company, all wishing for the expansion of agricultural product exports.

This export created an opportunity to diversify sales not only to Hong Kong and Vietnam but also to Canada. It is the result of continuous exchanges with buyers based on trust and sincerity, which received positive responses from domestic consumers.

This year, Namwon City is expected to produce about 6,000 tons of grapes cultivated on 373 hectares by approximately 700 farms. The Agricultural Product Production Area Distribution Center has introduced the latest grape sorting machines and secured a large-scale joint sorting system. They are supplying to major domestic distribution stores and exporting overseas, including to Hong Kong.

Namwon Mayor Choi Kyung-sik said, "The export of Namwon grapes to Canada will be an opportunity for local agricultural products to be recognized in the global market," adding, "We will continue to spare no support for the global market entry of high-quality agricultural specialties."
