Busan National University 'International Joint Research on Digital Innovation Technology' - Gwacheon City Selected as Demonstration City for 'Digital-Based Climate Change Response'

Joint Promotion of Urban Model Construction and Urban Planning for AI-Driven Urban Cooling Project

Pusan National University (President Choi Jae-won) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gwacheon City, Gyeonggi Province, on the afternoon of the 1st at the university headquarters to promote industry-academia cooperation for optimizing the effects of urban cooling technology using artificial intelligence.

Through this MOU, the two institutions agreed to jointly achieve the goal of "responding to urban climate change," a problem faced by the local community.

To this end, they will collaborate on △ joint development of AI-based urban cooling technology and demonstration technology △ integration of technology into urban policies △ technology education and support △ provision of research sites for climate change adaptation technology demonstration within Gwacheon City.

Previously, Pusan National University was selected for an international joint research project with Singapore under the ‘Digital Innovation Technology International Joint Research Project’ supported by the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) (Principal Investigator: Professor Kwon Soon-cheol, Department of Social and Environmental Systems Engineering). This research aims to optimize the effects of urban cooling technology using an AI-based urban microclimate model and to mitigate urban heat island effects through demonstration research, thereby improving the health and living environment of urban residents.

Additionally, Gwacheon City was selected as a demonstration city for the ‘Digital-based Climate Change Prediction and Damage Minimization Technology Development Project,’ a research project led by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Both Pusan National University and Gwacheon City, which are actively promoting urban climate change-related projects, plan to jointly advance the AI-based urban cooling project through this MOU by collecting data for building urban spatial models in demonstration sections, creating urban models, and devising urban planning proposals that can make practical contributions.
