At the 7th Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee meeting of the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2024 held on the 31st of last month, the Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market Modernization Project was selected as a subject for a preliminary feasibility study.

Daegu City announced that since being selected in April for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' public wholesale market modernization project competition, it has now been chosen as a project subject to the Ministry of Economy and Finance's preliminary feasibility study.

As a campaign pledge of the 8th term of the elected government, Daegu City has been promoting the relocation of the Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market to Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun, and after thoroughly preparing the project plan, submitted a preliminary feasibility review request to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in September, ultimately being selected as a preliminary feasibility study target.

The modernization project budget totals 446 billion KRW, with 100.4 billion KRW from the national government and 345.6 billion KRW from local government funds, aiming for opening in 2032.

The relocated wholesale market will enhance user convenience for shippers and consumers by implementing a one-way process layout for optimal flow, installing a joint sorting center and an automated warehouse in the fruit and vegetable building, establishing an integrated auction hall, and setting up a joint delivery center and an online logistics center. It plans to build an advanced wholesale market by expanding integrated logistics functions and introducing a smart logistics system.

The Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market in Maechon-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, is the third largest public wholesale market nationwide and has served as a central hub for agricultural and marine product distribution south of the Han River. However, after 36 years since its opening, it faces urgent fundamental issues such as safety risks due to aging facilities, inefficiencies in logistics flow, lack of facility space caused by transactions nearly 200% above the designed capacity, and problems with waste odor, making relocation essential for resolving these problems.
