Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and known as the 'father of ChatGPT,' revealed that the next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, 'GPT-5,' is unlikely to be released within this year.
According to the economic media CNBC, Altman stated during an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on the online community Reddit on the 31st of last month (local time), "We cannot release (AI models) as quickly as we had hoped." He explained, "All models have become very complex, and we cannot release as many things simultaneously as we want," adding, "There are limits and difficulties in allocating computing resources to various great ideas."
Specifically, when asked about the release date of GPT-5 or a model of equivalent level, he responded, "We plan to unveil some great releases in the latter half of this year," but also said, "There is nothing that can be called GPT-5."
On the same day, Reddit users also asked OpenAI executives about the release dates of new ChatGPT features, including the video AI model 'Sora,' the image generation model 'DALL-E,' ChatGPT camera mode, and voice mode (AVM).
Altman wrote that the updated version of DALL-E "will be worth the wait," but confirmed that there is no release plan yet. He added that the AVM vision also has no scheduled release plan. When Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s head of product, was asked if the delay in Sora’s release was due to the computing power, time, and safety required for reasoning, he replied, "We need to create a perfect model," adding, "We must properly handle stability and other matters, and also scale computing."
Earlier, OpenAI, which led the AI boom by introducing the generative AI ChatGPT, is reportedly under pressure to continue delivering faster and more efficient updates amid AI technology competition from big tech companies including Google, CNBC reported. OpenAI’s GPT-4 was released in March last year. Additionally, Reddit mentioned the recent resignations of several prominent developers from OpenAI.
On the same day, OpenAI officially launched the search function within ChatGPT, marking its full-fledged competition with search engines such as Google and Microsoft (MS) Bing. OpenAI has been testing this search function under the name SearchGPT since July. When users ask questions as if chatting with a friend, ChatGPT automatically searches the web and responds with relevant information along with links. Altman named 'search' as his favorite feature since the launch of ChatGPT on social networking services (SNS).
