"I Thought It Was Oil"... Dozens Get Sick After Eating Pizza Baked with 'Daemagireum'

Controversy Over Pizza Baked with 'Daema Oil' in the US
Five Customers Hospitalized

An incident occurred in the United States where an employee at a pizza shop baked pizzas using 'hemp oil' instead of regular oil, causing dozens of customers who ate the pizzas to report abnormal symptoms.

According to foreign media including The New York Times on the 30th (local time), on the 22nd, at a pizza shop in Wisconsin, an employee mistakenly used hemp oil, resulting in five people receiving hospital treatment and dozens of customers being affected.

At the time, the shop employee ran out of the oil they normally used and brought oil from another shop in a nearby shared kitchen to cook. Although the label on the lid stated 'contains hemp,' the employee did not notice this and made the pizzas.

The problematic oil was reported to be a legal product used as 'food-grade hemp.' However, this oil contained THC, the marijuana component. Symptoms related to THC include dizziness, increased blood pressure, vomiting, anxiety, and hallucinations, and reactions can vary from person to person. The shop owner said, "The cook simply picked up the wrong oil," adding, "The dough for 60 pizzas was ultimately contaminated."

The U.S. Department of Health received dozens of reports from people who felt abnormal after eating the pizza, and five of them were transported to the hospital. This was because it was judged that they might have been exposed to a 'foodborne illness.' Authorities stated, "The THC concentration may vary in each pizza slice."

This pizza shop, which became controversial due to drugs, is not the first case. Previously, in Germany, a restaurant was caught by the police for selling 'cocaine' together with a pizza set menu. On the 22nd, local media including the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) reported that the police in D?sseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, raided a local pizza shop, arrested the manager, and uncovered a drug organization.

It was revealed that the shop sold cocaine as a side menu instead of salad or bread to customers who ordered the 'menu number 40' pizza set. The police said, "Menu number 40 is one of the best-selling menus at the shop."

The police tracked the drug supply network related to the pizza shop and raided two cannabis farms in the western German cities of M?nchengladbach and Solingen. In addition, they searched the homes and offices of drug organization members and arrested a total of three people, including the head of the drug organization.
