Changwon Special City Awards 15 Organizations for Excellence in Climate Crisis Response and Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Hosting the Akim-e and Carbon Point System Competition

Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held the ‘Akim-e Competition Season 2 and Carbon Neutral Point System Participation Competition Awards Ceremony’ on the 31st in the City Hall 3rd Conference Room.

‘Akim-e Competition Season 2’ is a project promoted through a business agreement signed on April 11th by Changwon Special City, Korea Electric Power Corporation Gyeongnam Headquarters, and Korea Energy Agency Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters, the first of its kind nationwide. Following last year, Season 2 this year significantly expanded the participation scope from villages (residential houses) to villages (residential houses), commercial markets, and welfare facilities.


A total of 64 locations participated, including 7 villages/houses, 27 commercial markets, and 30 welfare facilities. They were evaluated based on the reduction rate of electricity usage compared to the same period from June to August of the previous year, the subscription rate to the Carbon Neutral Point System, and carbon neutrality practices. As a result, nine locations were finally selected: ▲Grand Prize (3) Yulti Village in Jinjeon-myeon, Samhwak Market in Chungmu-dong, Yeoja Children’s House in Yeoja-dong ▲Excellence Award (3) Yongjeon Village in Dong-eup, Yangdeok Central Market Merchants Association in Yangdeok 1-dong, Namseong Senior Center in Yangdeok 1-dong ▲Encouragement Award (3) Noksu Villa in Pungho-dong, Kolon Commercial Building in Naeseo-eup, Sarang House in Daesan-myeon.


The grand prize winners received plaques, prize money, and cooling devices or solar power facilities as awards. The prize money was KRW 1,000,000 each for grand prize winners, KRW 700,000 each for excellence award winners, and KRW 400,000 each for encouragement award winners. The funding was shared 50:50 between Changwon City and KEPCO Gyeongnam Headquarters. Two cooling devices were provided by KEPCO Gyeongnam Headquarters, and one solar power facility was provided by Korea Energy Agency Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters.


The city stated that a major achievement of this competition was the electricity saved over three months compared to the previous year, amounting to 25 MWh, which is equivalent to the amount one four-person household would use over six years.


The new Carbon Point System participation competition for apartment complexes, conducted since May this year, saw participation from 20 apartment complexes with a total of 468 households newly enrolled. Six apartments were selected: ▲Grand Prize (1) Daebang Gaenari 1st Apartment (incentive KRW 1,530,000) ▲Excellence Award (2) Gapo LH Apartment Complex 1 (incentive KRW 1,515,000), Changwon Seokdong LH Apartment (incentive KRW 885,000) ▲Encouragement Award (3) Gapo Kumho Eoullim NHF Apartment (incentive KRW 705,000), Masan Gyobang Sangnok Apartment (incentive KRW 600,000), Changwon Hyeondong LH Apartment (incentive KRW 480,000).


Jo Myeong-rae, the 2nd Deputy Mayor, said, “Despite this year’s unusually hot summer, I sincerely thank everyone for their efforts to reduce electricity usage and newly enroll in the Carbon Neutral Point System. The city will make multifaceted efforts to ensure that these efforts are not in vain and to advance as a leading carbon-neutral city.”
