"Seoul Among World's Top 5 Cities"…Launch of Seoul City Urban Architecture 'Expert Council'

Hold 1st Meeting Next Month
Composed of 10 Domestic and International Experts

An expert consultative body to enhance the international competitiveness of Seoul's urban space and architecture is being launched. They will discuss Seoul's complex urban issues and propose mid- to long-term development directions.


On the 31st, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the ‘Seoul Chief Architect Partners,’ composed of experts in urban planning, architecture, design, sustainability, and landscaping, will begin full-scale activities. They plan to hold their first meeting next month to decide on operational plans and key discussion topics. The city explained, “The consultative body is being operated to respond more strategically to rapidly changing urban issues and intensifying global competition.”


The Seoul Chief Architect Partners consist of 10 domestic and international experts with extensive practical experience in their respective fields. Domestic participants include Professor Jahoon Koo from Hanyang University, Professor Moonkyu Choi from Yonsei University, Professor Pilsoo Maeng and Professor John Hong from Seoul National University, and Professor Woongseong Oh from Hongik University. International architects participating include Thomas Heatherwick (UK), Dominique Perrault (France), Ben van Berkel (Netherlands), J?rgen Mayer (Germany), and James Corner (USA).

The city stated, “Domestic experts can propose policies considering Seoul’s unique characteristics, and international experts bring rich experience from global projects. They will play a crucial role in helping Seoul leap to become a global top 5 city.”


The consultative body will first discuss topics such as ‘100-Year Vision for Seoul’s Future’ and ‘Innovation in Urban Architectural Design.’ They will comprehensively analyze the outcomes of urban space and architectural policies promoted by the city, coordinate policies, and consider implementation and supplementation measures. Additionally, they are expected to serve as advisors offering solutions to major current issues facing the city.


Im Changsoo, Director of Future Space Planning at Seoul City, said, “The Seoul Chief Architect Partners will establish a comprehensive cooperative system with the Chief Architect of Seoul and act as a think tank to elevate the innovation and competitiveness of Seoul’s urban architecture to a world-class level.”
