Seoul's Unmarried Rate at 63% 'Highest Nationwide'... Half of People in Their 30s Are Unmarried

More than half of people in their 30s, the typical age range for marriage and childbirth, have not married. Additionally, Seoul was identified as the city with the highest unmarried rate nationwide.

On the 30th, Statistics Korea released key results from the expanded publication of the Population and Housing Census containing this information.

According to the published results, among 42,941,000 domestic residents aged 18 and over, the unmarried population was 12,675,000 (29.5%), and the population with spouses ('married') was 24,321,000 (56.6%). The widowed and divorced population totaled 5,945,000 (13.8%).

By gender, the unmarried rate was 34.2% for men and 24.9% for women. The unmarried rate for people in their 30s, who have the highest marriage and birth rates, was 51.3%. By city and province, Seoul had the highest rate at 62.8%, while Sejong had the lowest at 34.4%.

The elderly dependency ratio, which is the number of elderly people supported per 100 working-age population, was 27.3 last year, higher than the youth dependency ratio of 15.9.

Statistics Korea will expand the provision of results from the Registered Census (full enumeration section of the Population and Housing Census) starting at the end of this month to respond to population crises such as low birth rates, aging, and regional extinction.
