Personal Information Protection Commission Launches Investigation into 'Modetour' for Data Breach

The Personal Information Protection Commission on the 30th launched an investigation into 'Modetour,' which recently sparked controversy over personal information leakage.

At a briefing held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Vice Chairman Choi Jang-hyuk stated, "There is a significant gap between the actual date of the leakage incident and the date Modetour reported it, so we are assessing the situation," adding, "We initiated the investigation after receiving a report from the company."

Last month, Modetour disclosed, "Around June, malicious code was inserted into our website, resulting in the leakage of some member information and information entered during non-member reservations."

The leaked information includes Korean and English names, IDs, dates of birth, mobile phone numbers, connection information (CI), and duplicate information (DI). Vice Chairman Choi said, "Since it is a travel agency with many users, more than 60 related dispute mediation applications have been submitted."

Regarding the investigation into KakaoPay, which has been suspected of transferring over 50 billion pieces of personal credit information to Chinese Alipay and others, he said, "Regardless of the disposition results by other institutions such as the Financial Supervisory Service under the Credit Information Act, the Personal Information Protection Commission is separately reporting violations of personal information transfer overseas," adding, "I think the government should resolve issues such as dual regulation through consultation."
