Goyang Special City has been holding the '2024 Goyang Reading Festival' from the 25th to the 26th at the Goyang City Library and Ilsan Lake Park. Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 30th that the ‘2024 Goyang Reading Festival,’ held from the 25th to the 26th at Goyang City Library and Ilsan Lake Park, concluded successfully.
Hosted by Goyang Special City and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Publication Culture Industry Promotion Agency, this event saw participation from over 10,000 citizens who shared the value and joy of reading together, following last year’s ‘2023 Korea Reading Festival Goyang.’
This year’s Reading Festival was held under the slogan ‘Exist, Read, Connect,’ featuring 29 programs across 9 categories including book talks, reading forums, performances, reading recreation, book markets, and exhibitions, with participation from Goyang City libraries and various stakeholders in the fields of reading, culture, education, and arts in the region.
On the first day of the event, a ‘Meeting with Author Cha In-pyo’ was held at Aram Nuri Library, where after the lecture, Goyang City reading clubs engaged the author with in-depth questions, receiving great responses from attendees. Additionally, at Hwajeong Library, the ‘Underline Festival’ was held in memory of the late author Choi In-hoon, providing a meaningful time.
At the opening ceremony on the second day, individuals and groups who contributed to the promotion of reading culture were commended. Three outstanding families selected as the 2024 Goyang City Reading Families, along with Hoban Wisdom Forest, Jaemiitneun Neutinamu On Family Library, and Ilsan Y City Private Small Library, were awarded for their contributions to fostering reading culture.
The outdoor library set up at Hanul Square in Ilsan Lake Park, decorated with bean bags, parasols, and paper bookshelves, became a popular space where many citizens could comfortably enjoy books under the clear autumn sky. A yoga experience was also offered, providing time to heal body and mind in nature.
In particular, to commemorate author Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win, the ‘Han Kang Author Exhibition’ and the ‘Exhibition of Korean Literary Works Awarded Overseas Literature Prizes’ were held, offering an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and achievements of Korean literature.
The reading recreation ‘Reading Amusement Hall,’ popular among family visitors, encouraged children to naturally develop interest in reading through various activities such as group board games, reading OX quizzes, and initial consonant quizzes on children’s books.
Fifteen experience booths featured participation from cooperating organizations including the Gyeonggi-do Goyang Office of Education, Goyang Children’s Museum, Ilsan Dong-gu Public Health Center, Goyang Arts High School, and the Goyang Small Library Council, providing diverse cultural experience opportunities.
A representative from the Goyang City Library Center stated, “We hope citizens naturally discover the joy of reading through the 2024 Goyang Reading Festival,” adding, “We will continue to support the activation of local reading culture.”
