Replacing Old Manhole Covers Concurrently... Creating a Safe Walking Environment
Gyeonggi Paju City (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 30th that it will install fall prevention nets to prevent damage caused by manhole cover openings.
During the summer rainy season, when rainwater fills the inside of the sewer pipes, the water pressure can cause the manhole cover to open.
In response, Paju City plans to create a safe walking environment by installing steel structures directly beneath the manhole covers. This year, fall prevention safety nets will be installed at 100 locations within the Unjeong New Town district, where the sewer pipes are deep and there is a high flow of people.
Additionally, Paju City is promoting the replacement of concrete manhole covers with steel manhole covers equipped with fall prevention safety nets. This measure was prepared because concrete manhole covers are prone to cracking or damage, posing a risk of safety accidents.
Currently, replacement work is underway targeting 100 locations in Paju-eup Paju and Yeonpung-ri, as well as Beopwon-eup Beopwon and Daeneung-ri areas, where the installation year is old and the risk of damage is high. In the future, all concrete manhole covers will be replaced annually.
Im Sang-beom, head of the Sewerage Division, said, “We expect this manhole improvement project to greatly enhance the stability around manholes,” and added, “We prioritize citizens’ safety and plan to expand the target areas to continuously promote manhole improvement projects.”
