According to the '2023 Digital Information Gap Survey' announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT last March, the digital informatization level of the four major information-vulnerable groups has been improving every year, but it was still found to be low at an average score of 82.2 out of 100 compared to the general public.
Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kang Su-hyun) announced on the 29th that it has pilot distributed 'Yangju NEWS Seen Through the Five Senses (hereinafter Yangju NEWS),' which contains major city administration news for information-vulnerable groups.
This project, one of the '2024 Yangju City Departmental Innovation Brand Tasks,' was prepared not just to provide information but to improve the quality of life for the digitally vulnerable and to encourage active social participation as members of society.
Published on the city's official promotional social media (Facebook) on the 29th, this 'Yangju NEWS' was produced by overlaying AI voice on card news that anyone can easily understand, tailored by information delivery types for the visually and hearing impaired, people with developmental disabilities, the elderly, and children.
The city expects this project to somewhat alleviate the digital divide caused by the widespread adoption of AI-based smart daily life in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Starting with this pilot project, the city plans to use major SNS platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and KakaoTalk to provide not only local administrative news but also information on welfare benefits, so that all citizens can enjoy various advantages.
A city official stated, “The information gap is a concern that could deepen economic and social inequality beyond individual inconvenience,” and added, “We will do our best to support digital inclusion so that no citizen is left behind.”
