Busan Port Authority (BPA) announced on the 29th that Busan Port has reached a container cargo throughput of 20 million TEU (1 TEU equals one 20-foot container).
This achievement came about 15 days earlier compared to when the 20 million TEU milestone was first surpassed on November 12 last year, marking the shortest period since the opening of Busan Port.
When converted to a daily basis, this means Busan Port handled approximately 66,000 20-foot (about 6 meters) containers each day this year. If the containers processed in one day were lined up, the length would reach about 400 km, an enormous amount that could connect Busan to Seoul.
Despite uncertain conditions such as the global economic downturn, the Russia-Ukraine war, logistics disruptions caused by the Red Sea situation, and oil price volatility, Busan Port has handled over 20 million TEU of cargo for eight consecutive years, further solidifying its status as a global hub port.
The first time Busan Port surpassed 20 million TEU was in 2017, when it handled 20.49 million TEU.
Kang Jun-seok, President of BPA, said, “Achieving 20 million TEU in the shortest period despite global supply chain disruptions was possible thanks to close cooperation with our customers,” adding, “We will continue to provide stable logistics services so that Busan Port can maintain its important role as a global logistics hub.”
Busan Port processed 5.4% more container cargo compared to the previous year through September 2024, and if this trend continues, it is expected to surpass last year’s record of 23.15 million TEU, setting a new all-time high in cargo throughput.
