The government and private sector are accelerating the standardization of 6th generation (6G) mobile communication combined with artificial intelligence (AI), satellite communication, and the development of next-generation networks.

Kang Do-hyun, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated at the opening ceremony of 'Mobile Korea 2024' held on the 29th at LG Science Park in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, "We must realize the potential of 6G and create a connected future where we can enjoy a better life."

Vice Minister Kang emphasized, "This event will serve as a stepping stone to secure leadership in the next-generation network industry and foster international solidarity. We will work with the international community in the development of 6G commercialization technologies and global standardization competition."

He added, "The Ministry of Science and ICT is steadily promoting the development of core 6G technologies and is comprehensively supporting this through over 400 billion KRW in R&D. To secure satellite communication technology, we will also begin full-scale R&D on low Earth orbit satellite communication starting next year."

Referring to future tasks such as AI-based network efficiency and low power consumption of digital technologies, he said, "Just as we created the internet era with ultra-high-speed information communication network infrastructure, we will take bold challenges to establish new infrastructure for 6G communication."

On the same day, Vice Minister Kang presented ministerial commendations to those who contributed to next-generation network research and industrial development.

Following this, a memorandum of understanding was signed among India's 'Bharat 6G Alliance,' the United States' 'Next G Alliance,' and Korea's 6G Forum, representing global 6G leadership.

Through this agreement, global cooperation and technology sharing on next-generation communication technologies will be further strengthened, providing an important foundation for Korea to secure global leadership in 6G.

Meanwhile, Mobile Korea 2024, now in its 5th year, is being held from the 28th through November 1st, with over 200 experts from 60 institutions and companies across 14 countries, including the United States, the European Union (EU), Japan, and China.

This event combines '6G Society' (October 28), aimed at enhancing communication and exchange between the 6G mobile communication and satellite communication sectors; '6G Global' (October 29-30), discussing global trends in 6G technology and standards as well as 6G policy directions with domestic and international experts; and the '5G Vertical Summit' (October 31-November 1), sharing ways to activate 5G convergence services.
