Gangwon-do Yangyang-gun Hosts the Second 'Asia Peace Student Baduk Tournament'

Held at Yangyang Indoor Gymnasium from November 30 to December 1
About 500 students from major Asian countries to participate in 8 categories

Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-ha) announced on the 29th that the ‘10th Asia Peace Student Baduk Tournament 2024,’ which determines the strongest Baduk player among Asian students, will be held in Yangyang-gun, a global platform hub, from November 30 to December 1.

The Yangyang-gun Sports Council and Yangyang-gun Baduk Association have hosted this tournament for the second time following last year to serve as a venue for fostering global character and peace exchange among Asian students and to elevate the status of ‘Global Yangyang Baduk.’ Registration is open from October 21 until November 11 ahead of the main event.


This tournament is organized by the Yangyang-gun Sports Council and Yangyang-gun Baduk Association to deliver a message of peace through Baduk, a long-standing traditional sport in Asia. It is supervised by the Asian Baduk Federation and the Korea Youth Baduk Federation, with support from Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Yangyang-gun, and the Yangyang-gun Council.

This year’s tournament will see about 500 students from major Asian countries including the host country Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Mongolia, and the Philippines competing on the Baduk board, just like last year.


Anyone residing in Asia can participate, and participants are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until November 11. The tournament will be held at the Yangyang-gun Indoor Gymnasium and will feature eight divisions: middle and high school division, elementary school dan player division, upper grades division (1st to 9th grade), lower grades division (1st to 9th grade), Dream Tree division (10th to 18th grade), Shooting Star division (19th grade and below), Kindergarten Strongest division, and Kindergarten General division.

From the top 16 winners in each division to the champion, participants will receive souvenirs, prize money ranging from 10,000 KRW to a maximum of 500,000 KRW, certificates, and trophies. For comprehensive inquiries including accommodation, please contact the Yangyang-gun Baduk Association.


Lee Jang-seop, president of the Yangyang-gun Baduk Association, said, “By hosting the Asia Peace Student Baduk Tournament for the second consecutive year following last year, we are meticulously preparing to expand the image of Yangyang-gun and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province as a global hub city not only in Korea but also throughout Northeast Asia and Asia as a whole, while serving as a catalyst for establishing proper values and brain utilization among growing youth.” He added, “We ask for more interest and participation from domestic students in this year’s Asia Peace Student Baduk Tournament.”


Meanwhile, the Asia Peace Student Baduk Tournament, now in its 10th year, has been held annually in locations such as Osaka, Japan (the first tournament), China, Hong Kong, and Korea, playing a role in expanding the Baduk population base and delivering a message of proper brain use and peace among growing youth.
