The Gwangjin District Council (Chairperson Jeon Eun-hye) successfully concluded the 2024 Children and Youth Mock Council on the 28th at Gwangjin Elementary School.
A total of 146 elementary school students from the local area participated in the mock council held over eight sessions this year, enhancing their understanding of local councils and directly experiencing the democratic decision-making process.
The first half of the mock council, held over five sessions from April 29 to May 8, involved 101 students from Dongja Elementary School, Gwangnam Elementary School, and Yongma Elementary School. In the second half, from October 4 to 28, three sessions were held with 45 students from Gwangjin-gu 8th Branch Our Neighborhood Care Center, Guui Elementary School, and Gwangjin Elementary School.
The participating children toured the council building and then took on roles such as chairperson, council member, and secretary-general in the main assembly hall. They conducted meetings on agenda items related to children and youth, such as the “Pet Ownership Tax Collection Ordinance” and the “Installation of CCTV in Schools to Prevent School Violence Ordinance,” following the actual meeting procedures. After the experience, students were awarded certificates of completion, and the event concluded with chairperson role experiences and commemorative photos.
Jeon Eun-hye, Chairperson of the Gwangjin District Council, said, “Through the Children and Youth Mock Council, we will help students experience grassroots democracy and grow as democratic citizens. We will continue to strive to provide more substantial and satisfying programs.”
Meanwhile, the Gwangjin District Council operates mock councils for children and youth in the region during non-session periods every year and plans to conduct mock councils for elementary and middle schools in the district next year as well. Schools or institutions wishing to participate can apply through the Gwangjin District Council’s Legislative Team.
