Sungsan Village Leading Entrepreneurs Named in Road Names
"Expecting Spread of Jinju K-Entrepreneurship Spirit"
Jinju City in Gyeongnam announced on the 28th that it has bestowed honorary road names ‘Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro’ and ‘Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro,’ named after Gu Inhoe, the founder of LG Group representing Seungsan Village, Jisu, and Heo Manjeong, the pioneer of GS Group, to widely promote the excellent cultural assets of Seungsan Village and Jinju’s K-entrepreneurship.
Honorary road names are symbolic names added in addition to the official legal road names. ‘Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro’ and ‘Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro’ are the first honorary road names ever designated by Jinju City.
To assign the names ‘Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro’ and ‘Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro,’ Jinju City gathered opinions from local residents, held an address information committee meeting, and finalized the honorary road names. The honorary road nameplates and informational signs have already been installed.
‘Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro’ covers a section of Jisu-ro in Jisu-myeon, from the entrance of Sangdong Village to Seungsan Bridge, while ‘Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro’ covers a section of Yongbong-ro in Jisu-myeon, from the entrance of GS Caltex to the entrance of Sangdong Village. The Sangdong entrance, which is the starting point of ‘Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro’ and the end point of ‘Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro,’ symbolizes the partnership and separation of LG and GS after Yeonam Gu Inhoe and Hyoju Heo Manjeong jointly participated in establishing Rakhee Chemical Industry (now LG Chem) and later branched into their respective paths.
Yeonam Gu Inhoe, along with Hyoju Heo Manjeong, was a co-founder of LG Group. He delivered independence funds to the Shanghai Provisional Government through Baeksan Ahn Heeje and contributed to Korea’s economic development by founding businesses with the spirit of harmony, pioneering, and national service through enterprise. He also led social contributions by establishing the Yeonam Library (now Jinju Municipal Library) and the Yeonam Cultural Foundation.
Hyoju Heo Manjeong, the second son of Heo Jun from Jisinjeong, was a co-founder of LG Group and the root of GS Group. He delivered independence funds to Baeksan Trading Company, supported the Hyungpyeong Movement, which was a liberation movement for butchers’ social status, and led the establishment of Ilsin Girls’ High School, the predecessor of Jinju Girls’ High School.
A city official stated, “The assignment of honorary road names Yeonam Gu Inhoe-ro and Hyoju Heo Manjeong-ro carries significant meaning in commemorating the values and history of Jinju’s K-entrepreneurship.” He added, “Through this honorary road naming, we hope to widely promote Seungsan Village in Jisu and Jinju’s K-entrepreneurship and establish Jinju’s status as the capital of entrepreneurship in Korea.”
