The Drinking Water Quality Testing Agency of the Waterworks and Sewerage Office in Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) is striving to supply clean and safe tap water directly related to citizens' health and daily life. As a result, it has been recognized for its safety, receiving water quality certification from both our government and the United States, ensuring that the water is safe to drink with confidence.

According to Goyang Special City on the 28th, the Water Quality Testing Team of the Waterworks and Sewerage Office is an accredited drinking water quality testing institution designated by the Ministry of Environment. Among 161 local government waterworks operators nationwide, only 17 local governments have their own drinking water quality testing agencies. Goyang Special City has been recognized for its water quality analysis capabilities as an accredited institution since 2008.

Under the Drinking Water Management Act, only institutions equipped with the necessary equipment, technology, and personnel related to water quality testing can be recognized as accredited institutions.

Previously, since 2016, Goyang Special City has been selected as a 'Laboratory of Excellence' in the drinking water field for eight consecutive years in the international proficiency evaluation hosted by the Environmental Resource Association (ERA) in the United States.

The evaluation covers a total of 17 items including heavy metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds. Until last year, the city received a 'pass' rating in all categories. This year's evaluation is currently underway, and the city is establishing itself as a reliable institution domestically and internationally for drinking water quality testing.

The drinking water quality testing agency in Goyang City conducts a three-stage precise water quality inspection in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) and national water quality standards to ensure the safety of tap water.

In the first stage, samples are regularly collected from three water purification plants, nine key management areas, and 103 faucets, among other locations. Additionally, about 300 water quality tests are conducted monthly through sampling upon request from groundwater, water tanks, and indoor water supply pipes.

In the second stage, skilled technicians use high-performance equipment to conduct detailed analyses of over 50 items including heavy metals, harmful chemicals, and microorganisms. In the third stage, the test results are checked to ensure they do not exceed the standard limits. If any risks are identified, immediate necessary measures are taken. All testing processes are strictly conducted according to the drinking water quality process testing standards.

The results of the monthly regular water quality tests and the annual tap water quality report are published on the Goyang City Waterworks and Sewerage Office website.

In particular, the tap water quality report contains information on the safety of tap water use, including the water quality test results of the raw water source, the production and management process of tap water, and the status of water supply.

The city also operates a Tap Water Evaluation Committee to resolve distrust and improve awareness of tap water, and runs a Tap Water Safety Confirmation Service so that any citizen can directly verify the safety of tap water.

Meanwhile, the Tap Water Safety Confirmation Service is operated so that any citizen can directly verify the safety of tap water. Responsible officials visit in person to collect samples and conduct tests. The test items include six categories: pH, residual chlorine, turbidity, iron, copper, and zinc. Citizens can receive free tap water quality testing and get results within 20 days after the visit. Goyang citizens who wish to have their tap water tested can apply through the Water Love website or the Water Facilities Division of Goyang City Hall.
