Country Village Carpenter Finds $20, Buys Lottery Ticket
Wins $1 Million... Chooses Lump Sum, Receives 600 Million Won
An American carpenter hit the jackpot after buying a lottery ticket with money he found on the street.
On the 28th, the U.S. lottery company 'NC Education Lottery' released a press statement on the 25th (local time) introducing the story of a carpenter from North Carolina.
Jerry Hicks, a carpenter working in Avery County, North Carolina, visited a car racetrack and found a $20 bill in the parking lot. He bought an instant scratch-off lottery ticket inside the racetrack. He originally wanted to buy a different lottery ticket, but since it was not available, he bought this one instead.
When he scratched the ticket, he won $1 million (approximately 1.4 billion KRW). He said that the first thing he wanted to do with the winnings was to eat to his heart's content at Golden Corral (a U.S. buffet chain). The $1 million prize can be received in installments, paying $50,000 annually for 20 years, or as a lump sum of $600,000 (approximately 830 million KRW), which after taxes leaves $429,000 (approximately 600 million KRW). Hicks chose the lump sum option.
Hicks said, "Having worked as a carpenter for 56 years, I plan to use the money for my retirement and for my children."
