SNL, Controversy Over 19+ Mockery of 'Jeongnyeon-i'
'SNL Korea' Season 6, which was previously embroiled in controversy over mocking writer Han Kang and NewJeans member Hani, is now facing criticism for satirizing the drama 'Jeongnyeon-i'.
On the 26th, the Coupang Play variety show 'SNL Korea' Season 6 featured a segment parodying the tvN drama 'Jeongnyeon-i'. Comedian Ahn Young-mi appeared as 'Jeotnyeon-i', imitating the drama's protagonist Yoon Jeongnyeon (played by Kim Tae-ri). She said, "I will show a more shocking Chunhyang," and changed the Pansori song 'Sarangga' line "Come here, let's play on my back" to "Come here, let's take off our clothes and have fun." She also made gestures suggestive of sexual activity. After hearing Ahn Young-mi's Pansori, Jeong I-rang said, "I can't watch anymore. Stop. Just watching this makes me feel like I'm going to get pregnant."
'Jeongnyeon-i' is a work about a teenage girl, Yoon Jeongnyeon, who overcomes hardships in the 1950s when women's social status was low, and pursues her dream by joining a women's national theater troupe. Some have criticized 'SNL Korea' for damaging the value of the drama and the original webtoon.
Netizens responded with comments such as "It's disrespectful to the original drama and the actors appearing in it," "It's neither funny nor amusing," "If you know what kind of drama 'Jeongnyeon-i' is, you wouldn't parody it like that," "I don't know which part I'm supposed to laugh at," "Is this supposed to be funny?" and "It's lowbrow."
This is not the first time 'SNL Korea' has been involved in controversy. In episode 8 of Season 6, released on the 19th, they presented a comedy segment based on the recent National Assembly audit witness investigation scene of Hani and an interview scene with writer Han Kang. However, the parody of Hani's National Assembly audit witness investigation included awkward Korean language acting, which sparked accusations of racial discrimination. Additionally, they exaggerated the posture and speech of Han Kang, the first Korean to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, leading to further ridicule controversy.
